    About the Bosnian Language

Bosnian is a form of Serbo-Croatian, a South Slavic language, spoken by Bosniaks. As a standardized form of the Shtokavian dialect, it is one of the three official languages of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The same subdialect of Shtokavian is also the basis of standard Croatian, Serbian, and Montenegrin, so all are mutually intelligible. Sometimes, the name of the language is referred to as Bosniak (also spelled "Bosniac"; bošnjački), mostly by Croats and Serbs stating it is the standard language just of ethnic Bosniaks, not of ethnic Croats and Serbs who respectively use Croatian or Serbian language standard.

    Bosnian Community in Australia

Australia's Bosnian community arrived primarily through one of the most difficult circumstances in modern European history: the Bosnian War of 1992–1995. Australia accepted thousands of Bosnian refugees and humanitarian entrants during and after the conflict, and these families have since built stable lives and raised families in Australian cities — primarily Melbourne and Sydney, with Sydney's western suburbs home to a particularly active community. The community is now 30 years established in Australia, and the translation needs have evolved accordingly. Property in Bosnia remains a common subject of legal translation — many families retained land and homes in Bosnia that are now being sold, transferred within families, or subject to estate proceedings. Connections with relatives in Bosnia also generate family reunion and partner visa translation work. A historically specific complication: civil registry offices in some Bosnian municipalities were damaged or destroyed during the 1992–1995 war, creating gaps in records that can complicate document retrieval for affected families. Bosnian uses Latin script in everyday and most official use, though Cyrillic is also constitutionally recognised. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a Hague Apostille Convention signatory; current documents are apostille-stamped. The language is closely related to Croatian and Serbian and is mutually intelligible with both — but NAATI accreditation is language-specific, and a Bosnian document should be handled by a Bosnian-accredited translator.
