About the Hungarian Language
Hungarian is a Uralic language, part of the Ugric group. With some 14 million speakers, it is one of the most widely spoken non-Indo-European languages in Europe. It is the official language in the Central European country of Hungary and is also spoken by Hungarian communities in the seven neighboring countries and by diaspora communities worldwide.
Hungarian Community in Australia
Australia's Hungarian community was largely defined by a single pivotal moment: the Soviet suppression of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. Thousands of Hungarians — many of them young, educated, and skilled — fled the country in the weeks following the uprising, and Australia received a substantial number as part of an emergency international resettlement program. This wave of refugees integrated rapidly and contributed substantially to Australian professional, academic, and cultural life over the following decades. The community is now well into its third and fourth generation, and the translation profile reflects this maturity. Immigration documents are rarely the presenting need; far more common are estate matters, property dealings with Hungary, and legal proceedings involving parties in both countries. Hungarian citizenship by descent is also a growing area — Hungary permits citizenship applications from descendants of Hungarian nationals, and the process requires certified translations of family civil records across multiple generations. Hungarian is linguistically unique in Europe — it is a Finno-Ugric language, related to Finnish and Estonian but to no other major European language. Its grammar, with 18-35 grammatical cases depending on the analysis, makes it genuinely demanding to translate accurately. NAATI accreditation in Hungarian is correspondingly less common than for Slavic or Romance languages. Hungary is an EU member and Hague Apostille Convention signatory.
