About the Romanian Language
Romanian is a Romance language spoken by around 24 to 28 million people, primarily in Romania and Moldova. The first Romanian grammar was published in Vienna in 1780. The period from 1905 to 1917 was one of increasing linguistic conflict, with the re-awakening of Romanian national consciousness. In 1905 and 1906, the Bessarabian zemstva asked for the re-introduction of Romanian in schools as a "compulsory language", and the "liberty to teach in the mother language (Romanian language)".
Romanian Community in Australia
Romania's EU accession in 2007 opened new pathways for Romanian emigration across Europe and, to a lesser extent, to Australia. The Australian Romanian community has grown steadily through the skilled migration and student visa programs, with arrivals tending to be younger professionals and tradespeople drawn by Australia's labour market opportunities. The community is relatively new by Australian standards — there was limited Romanian migration before the late 2000s — and is concentrated in Melbourne and Sydney. Romanian translation requests follow a typical new-migrant pattern: birth certificates, marriage certificates, police clearances, and educational credentials for visa and registration purposes. Romanian civil documents are issued through the national civil status registry, and the format has been standardised for EU purposes. Romanian is a Romance language — the only major Romance language spoken in Eastern Europe — and uses Latin script with several diacritical characters. Romania is an EU member and Hague Apostille Convention signatory; documents are apostille-stamped. A note of practical relevance: Romanian is sometimes confused with Romani (the language of Roma people), which is entirely unrelated — Romani is an Indo-Aryan language, while Romanian is a Romance language descended from Latin.
