About the Greek Language
Greek is an independent branch of the Indo-European family of languages. Native to the southern Balkans, it has the longest documented history of any Indo-European language, spanning 34 centuries of written records. The Greek language holds an important place in the histories of Europe, the more loosely defined "Western" world, and Christianity; the canon of ancient Greek literature includes works of monumental importance and influence for the future Western canon, such as the epic poems Iliad and Odyssey. Greek was also the language in which many of the foundational texts of Western philosophy, such as the Platonic dialogues and the works of Aristotle.
Greek Community in Australia
The Greek community in Australia is one of the country's most celebrated migrant success stories. The post-World War II and post-Civil War migration waves brought tens of thousands of Greeks to Australia — particularly to Melbourne, which became home to what is often described as the world's third-largest Greek city after Athens and Thessaloniki. The community built institutions, cultural associations, schools, and churches that remain active today, and Greek-Australians are prominent across business, politics, arts, and academia. This depth of establishment means the translation needs of today's Greek-Australian community are quite different from earlier generations'. Immigration documents are less central; the more common requests now involve property matters in Greece or Cyprus, estate administration for community members who passed while holding assets in Greece, business contracts, and legal proceedings involving parties in both countries. Greece's integration with the EU has also created a growing stream of commercial translation work as Australian businesses engage with Greek counterparts. Greece and Cyprus are both EU members and Hague Apostille Convention signatories; documents are apostille-stamped and well-maintained through a centralised civil registry system. Greek uses its own alphabet — the oldest European alphabet in continuous use — which is unrelated to Latin or Cyrillic despite having influenced both.
