About the Croatian Language
Croatian is the collective name for the standard language and dialects spoken by Croats, principally in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Serbian province of Vojvodina and other neighbouring countries. Standard and literary Croatian is based on the central dialect, Shtokavian, more specifically on Eastern Herzegovinian, which is also the basis of standard Serbian, Bosnian, and Montenegrin.
Croatian Community in Australia
Croatian migration to Australia has a notably distinctive geographic character: beyond the expected concentrations in Melbourne and Sydney, Croatian-Australians have a strong presence in Western Australia tied to the state's mining industry — Kalgoorlie's Croatian community, in particular, is one of the most historically significant Croatian settlements outside Croatia itself, dating to the gold rush era and growing through the 20th century. Coastal Queensland also has a long-established Croatian community tied to the pearling and fishing industries. The community spans multiple generations of settlement, and the translation work reflects this: property in Croatia, estate administration for Croatian-Australians who retained assets there, and Croatian citizenship matters for descendants are all common requests. Croatia's EU membership since 2013 has also strengthened business ties between Australian and Croatian companies, generating commercial translation demand beyond the migration context. Croatian uses Latin script and is one of the South Slavic languages. Croatia is an EU member and Hague Apostille Convention signatory; documents are apostille-stamped and the civil registry system is well-maintained. Croatian, Bosnian, and Serbian are closely related and mutually intelligible to a high degree, but NAATI accreditation is language-specific.
