About the Spanish Language
Spanish (español) or Castilian (castellano listen (help·info)) is a Romance language in the Ibero-Romance group that evolved from several dialects of spoken Latin in central-northern Iberia around the ninth century and gradually spread with the expansion of the Kingdom of Castile (present northern Spain) into central and southern Iberia during the later Middle Ages.
Spanish Community in Australia
Australia's Spanish-speaking community is notably diverse in origin — unlike many migrant groups defined by a single source country, Spanish speakers arrive from across Spain and more than a dozen Latin American nations, each with distinct document systems, civil registry practices, and authentication requirements. Argentina has historically been a significant source, along with Colombia, Chile, and Peru; Brazil contributes Portuguese speakers who often also speak Spanish. This diversity matters practically for translation. A Colombian birth certificate looks quite different from a Spanish one; Chilean civil registry documents use a distinct format; Argentine documents may require authentication through the Argentine consulate even though Argentina is a Hague Convention member. The Apostille Convention membership status also varies across the continent — most Latin American countries are members, which generally simplifies authentication, but individual country processes still differ. Spanish is written in Latin script and is broadly standardised across countries for formal documents — regional vocabulary differences that loom large in spoken Spanish are largely absent from civil records and official paperwork. NAATI-certified Spanish translators are generally competent across document types and source countries, though translators with specific experience in the document formats of a particular country are preferable for complex projects.
