    About the Malay Language

Malay is a major language of the Austronesian family. It is the official language of Malaysia (as Malaysian), Indonesia (as Indonesian), Brunei (as Melayu Brunei) and Singapore (as the national language and one of four official languages of Singapore). It is spoken natively by 40 million people across the Malacca Strait, including the coasts of the Malay Peninsula of Malaysia and southern Thailand, the eastern coast of Sumatra, and the Riau Islands in Indonesia.

    Malay Community in Australia

The Malaysian community in Australia is one of the more longstanding Asian student communities — Malaysia has been sending students to Australian universities in significant numbers since the 1990s, and many have subsequently transitioned to permanent residency. The community includes both ethnic Malays and Malaysians of Chinese and Indian descent who speak Malay as an official language. English fluency is generally high, reflecting Malaysia's bilingual education system, but official documents are issued in Bahasa Malaysia (Malaysian Malay). Malaysian civil documents — particularly birth certificates (sijil kelahiran), marriage certificates (sijil nikah or sijil perkahwinan), and academic records — are among the most regularly translated in Australia's Southeast Asian language category. Malaysia operates a National Registration Department (Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara) that maintains a centralised civil registry, and documents are generally well-organised and retrievable. Bahasa Malaysia and Bahasa Indonesia are closely related — the languages share origins and much vocabulary — but have diverged in spelling conventions, vocabulary, and standardisation since the colonial period. A NAATI-accredited Malay translator works specifically with Malaysian Malay; an Indonesian translator, while able to understand much of a Malaysian document, should not be engaged as a substitute. Malaysia is a Hague Apostille Convention member; documents can be apostille-stamped.
