    Wollongong NAATI Translation Services

Wollongong is a coastal city in Australia, south of Sydney along the Grand Pacific Drive. Surfing beaches and rock pools line the coastline. Trails encircle the forests and rocky cliffs of Mt. Keira in the Illawarra mountain range, which frames the city. To the north, hang gliders launch from Bald Hill. South lie the Buddhist temple of Nan Tien and Lake Illawarra, a large lagoon with boating and fishing facilities.

    About the Cambodian Language

Cambodian (Khmer), is the language of the Khmer people and the official language of Cambodia. It is the second most widely spoken Austroasiatic language (after Vietnamese), with speakers in the tens of millions. Khmer has been considerably influenced by Sanskrit and Pali, especially in the royal and religious registers, through the vehicles of Hinduism and Buddhism. It is also the earliest recorded and earliest written language of the Mon–Khmer family, predating Mon and by a significant margin Vietnamese.

    Cambodian Community in Australia

Australia's Cambodian community traces its origins primarily to the humanitarian resettlement programs of the 1980s, which brought Cambodian survivors of the Khmer Rouge genocide (1975–1979) and the subsequent Vietnamese occupation. These arrivals, many of whom had spent years in border refugee camps, resettled primarily in southwestern Sydney — Cabramatta and surrounding suburbs became home to one of the largest Cambodian communities outside Cambodia itself. The community is now into its second and third generation. The Khmer Rouge period created a specific and tragic challenge for Cambodian civil records: the regime systematically destroyed civil registration archives as part of its attempt to erase pre-revolutionary society. Many Cambodians have no accessible birth certificate or family records from before 1979. Reconstructed documents issued post-1979 by the People's Republic of Kampuchea, and later by the Kingdom of Cambodia, vary significantly in format and reliability. Translators with specific experience in post-conflict Cambodian document contexts are essential for complex matters. Khmer script (អក្សរខ្មែរ) is one of Southeast Asia's oldest scripts, derived from an ancient Indian script and bearing visual similarity to Thai and Lao. It is an abugida with no spaces between words. Cambodia is not a Hague Apostille Convention member; Cambodian documents require consular authentication for use in Australian proceedings.
